Today’s TV programs are unthinkable without the use of modern non-linear editing (NLE) systems. Products from dozens of different manufacturers compete in the marketplace, and all broadcasters have valid reasons to favor one system over the other: Recent investments, demand for integration into the workflow, or simply the fact that the staff has years of experience with a specific program all play an important role in the decision process. This makes non-linear editing systems a part of the workflow that cannot easily be changed.
Adding graphics, such as lower thirds, bugs, and squeeze backs to the video timeline in post production can be a challenge. While today’s NLE systems are perfectly suited to edit and rearrange video and audio elements, most are missing the possibility to easily integrate additional, flexible graphic elements to the timeline. instead, graphics have to be pre-rendered to a file, which can then be inserted into the NLE system. Since last minute changes can not easily be adjusted effects often have to be rendered anew.
Viz NLE combines the real-time graphics pipeline with an existing post-production environment, allowing broadcasters to use the graphic elements in both surroundings. With Viz NLE there is no need for recreating existing graphics for use in a specific NLE system. Graphics that have been created using Vizrt applications can be used in the live as well as the post-production workflow.
With the Viz Trio and Viz Content Pilot news room component being available in the NLE system, users can choose graphic effects and insert them into the timeline of the editing system by simply dragging them into place.
The whole workflow happens on the same PC, and the user can simply open Viz Trio from inside the editing system. All graphics templates are then available from within the NLE.
After adding the graphics to the timeline, the final result can easily be adjusted by moving the graphics around within the editing application. Because the effects are not pre-rendered, they can always be edited, from simple spell checking to choosing different pictures or graphic elements.
One of Viz NLE’s unique features is the possibility to dynamically change the duration of graphics effect directly on the timeline. Unlike with pre-rendered effects, the animations that are imported through Viz NLE are safe-guarded in respect to their in and out animations. This allows operators to re-use unaltered graphics independently of the actual length of the NLE effect.
Vizrt has set itself the goal to support the broadest possible variety of NLE systems. Integration with half a dozen systems has already been implemented and the number is growing steadily. Today, Viz NLE provides a suite of plug-ins for NLE applications by Avid, Quantel, and Apple.
In addition, third-party vendors have developed Viz NLE-like functionality in their own software. Harris Velocity, EVS CleanEdit, and Sony XPRI provide their own plug-ins that allow to integrate Vizrt graphics into the timeline of their respective NLE systems.
