Univision Deportes enhances live coverage of the 2016 Copa America Centenario with Vizrt

Spanish-language broadcaster helps viewers gain a better understanding of the action with image-based 3D virtual technology.

Univision Deportes, the multimedia sports division of Univision Communications Inc., used 3D sports analysis and virtual image technology from Vizrt, the leading provider of sports production tools for the digital media industry, to provide some of the most captivating analysis of this year’s 2016 Copa America Centenario football tournament. The event was held at ten different outdoor stadiums across the United States from June 3–26, 2016.

This year Univision Deportes, a long time Vizrt customer, added a few new tools to its arsenal for its coverage of the matches, including new features for its existing Viz Libero 3D virtual sports analysis software. The event also features Univision Deportes’ first deployment of Viz Arena, used to add any kind of virtual 3D graphics – team logos, virtual lineups or free kick distances – onto the field of play. Viz Arena’s telestrator and offside line tools were also used extensively for in-game replays to help the viewer focus on the key action of the game.

Among the new features of Viz Libero, Vizrt’s analysis system that Univision Deportes employed are automatic player tracking to quickly generate player tracks for in-game replays; and a tight integration with Opta Sports, a global sports data provider. The Opta system provides real-time sports data that is fed into the Viz Libero system, giving viewers a better understanding of the game action (i.e. with heatmaps) and individual player statistics.

Both the Viz Libero and Viz Arena solutions work completely image-based, without any hardware required at the stadium. In this case they were used remotely from Univision Deportes’ main studio facilities in Miami, Florida.
