PAM — How Naftemporiki built a scalable Media Asset Management workflow with Viz One

Naftemporiki Viz One

Summary

Media Asset Management System (MAM). Total Archive Management System (TAM). Production Asset Management System (PAM). Call it what you want but every organization that creates media needs an efficient way to manage its assets. Greek financial channel, Naftemporiki TV, chose to build their newsroom workflow around Viz One. A central production asset management system that helps their small team quickly find, create, reuse and move content faster, while giving the channel room to grow.

For Naftemporiki TV, launching a new channel was never going to be a gradual evolution.

With around six months to build its television news operation, the engineering team had to move quickly from a relatively basic web broadcast to a professional free-to-air news channel workflow capable of supporting around 15 hours of live programming every day.

The team had one goal. Mimic the production quality of much larger news channels, but without the same level of staffing, infrastructure and traditional production centers. What they had though was content – more than 100 years of award-winning business journalism.

At the center of Naftemporiki TV’s workflow sits Viz One — Vizrt’s Media Asset Management tool.

“Viz One is a key part of our system. Maybe it is even the most important part for this ecosystem.”

Choosing integration over another media silo

CTO Iakovos ‘Jacob’ Panourgias and his team evaluated solutions from multiple manufacturers but wanted a MAM that would work as part of the wider production ecosystem.

“We researched a lot of manufacturers and companies, and we understood that the best idea was to install a MAM that actually works natively with the Vizrt production ecosystem.”

That centralization matters because Naftemporiki’s operation is built around a connected Vizrt workflow. They did not want a MAM on the sidelines as an archive repository. At Naftemporiki TV, Viz One would become the backbone connecting content to the wider production process.

As Panourgias puts it, everything effectively “starts and ends” with Viz One.

“Viz One is a key part of our system. Maybe it is even the most important part for this ecosystem,” says Panourgias.

Incoming newsroom material, live content and other assets are all brought into Viz One. Metadata and AI integrations organize media files to cut logging and search times, making content easier to find and reuse. Journalists edit stories at their desks using Viz Story complete with graphics, and the completed material returns to Viz One.

Turning old material into new content

That centralized workflow addresses an important newsroom pain point: content that has already been produced should not need to be recreated simply because another program needs it.

Metagraphics in Viz One is particularly important to that workflow — keeping video and graphics separate. Graphics can therefore be changed for another use without having to recreate the original media. The result is a more valuable archive with materials that can keep being reused.

A PAM is only as good as its metadata

There is, however, a catch.  Putting everything into one system means people have to be able to find it at newsroom speed.

So the team built a structured approach to metadata based on their common vocabulary and implemented a keyword hierarchy.

“We have created one very smart way to add keywords… not just random words, but words  from our vocabulary, and, of course, with AI, we could quickly add thousands of these words,” confirms Panourgias.

Operators can then apply those keywords consistently to assets as they enter the system. This becomes increasingly important as the archive grows. Better metadata makes it easier for anyone for find material. And, for a newsroom working at the speed of breaking news, every second matters.

For Panourgias, usability is another important advantage.

“The nicest part of Viz One is how easy it is to add one asset, how easy it is to add the ‘in’ and ‘out points’, and very quickly create a sub-clip from a bigger clip.”

Changing people’s mindset

Panourgias is candid about how working with technology can be demanding. So, it was important for him that not only did the channel have the right technology, but that everyone across Naftemporiki TV understood the news operation. That meant training journalists and technical staff on how the tech could complement the editorial mission.

That training investment created something valuable — an efficient, repeatable way of working. Crucial for a small team punching way above their weight. And gave the channel a foundation it can now build on.

Planning for the next stage — growing with AI

The channel began with what Panourgias describes as a compact, entry-level Viz One configuration that is now growing with the station.

“Viz One is something very scalable. We started with something compact for us, the entry level of Viz One… it’s very easy now for us to go to the next step.”

And he has big plans for the future. To introduce more AI-assisted processes, using agents to automate repetitive tasks and help the team work faster. And ensure that the channel’s content works harder, too.

For a small broadcaster with big ambitions, that may be the strongest measure of success.

A production asset backbone around which the newsroom can continue to scale and grow.
