Simplifying Stage Production with TriCaster

Simplifying Stage Production with TriCaster

Case Study
Intro

Mr. Masahiko Sato, a stage video producer at Gekidan Sokuseki, operates at the intersection of entertainment and technical creativity. However, he found himself at a crossroads – his existing methods for capturing live theatre performances fell short of delivering professional-quality results while maintaining simplicity. Partnering with ASK Corporation, Mr. Sato explored an innovative solution in the form of Vizrt’s TriCaster Mini S.

This collaboration set the stage for a streamlined approach to live theatre recording, aimed at combining professional-grade outcomes with minimal operational complexity.

Challenge

Capturing Every Detail, Without the Post-Production Headache

Traditional methods for recording stage performances revealed multiple inefficiencies:

  • Single-camera setups failed to capture the intricate details of facial expressions or complex movement across the stage.
  • Editing after recording the show was time-consuming, and Mr. Sato wanted to reduce that workload by adopting a live-switching workflow.

Software solutions like OBS and Wirecast offered some features but lacked the reliability and broader capabilities essential for live production settings. Mr. Sato needed a solution capable of handling multiple PTZ cameras efficiently, simplifying operations, and most importantly, minimizing post-production workloads – all while maintaining high-quality standards.

Solution

Enter Stage Left – The TriCaster Mini S

As a former ASK M&E employee, Mr. Sato had some early exposure to the TriCaster before taking on this recording project. When he later consulted his former colleagues about improving his stage recording workflow, they recommended a trial of the TriCaster Mini S – a choice that helped him achieve professional-quality results with a simpler, more streamlined setup.

Key features included:

  • Flexible Connectivity: The TriCaster Mini S provided more input flexibility, allowing for easier setup and adaptability.
  • FileCapture Function for Backup and Simultaneous Recording: The ability to record both a “switching out video” and a fixed camera feed made it possible to keep a reliable backup, greatly reducing stress during production.
  • Integrated Workflow: Switching, recording, and graphic overlays are all handled in one system, reducing the need for separate devices and simplifying workflow.
  • Minimal Cabling with NDI: Replacing bulky HDMI and SDI cables with LAN cables made the entire setup cleaner and more mobile.
  • Wireless Return Monitors via NDI: Sending video over Wi-Fi allows for quick setup of return monitors in computers and smartphones, which proved valuable for backstage coordination and staff at the reception.
  • User-Friendly Operation & Camera Integration: Macro controls, thumbnail presets, and NDI|HX-compatible PTZ cameras made camera work easy – even for those with limited experience.
“With this solution, we’ve significantly cut down our editing time while delivering the same high standards our directors expect,” said Mr. Sato. “The ability to manage multiple cameras so effortlessly has transformed our production process.”

Outcome

Broadcast-Level Production, Simplified for Theatre

The adoption of the TriCaster Mini S yielded measurable improvements and innovative results for Mr. Sato’s productions:

  • Enhanced Video Quality: Mr. Sato successfully recorded six hours of high-quality stage performances. Multi-angle PTZ coverage allowed for seamless recording of dynamic performances while preserving critical details like facial expressions.
  • Streamlined Workflow: The NDI-based cabling significantly reduced setup complexity and dismantling time. Wireless return monitors powered backstage coordination, and the system’s H.264 backup recording added confidence in production reliability.
  • Simplified Training: Even non-technical staff found the system easy to operate, thanks to pre-configured macros and camera presets. As Mr. Sato shared, “By preparing the minimum macros, we could handle the actual performance seamlessly, even with operators unfamiliar with the equipment.”
  • Creative Freedom: With fewer technical constraints and reduced operational stress, Mr. Sato gained greater creative control over his productions.
Reflecting on the experience, Mr. Sato noted: “The TriCaster Mini S with NDI technology allowed us to transform our stage recording environment. Tasks that were once tedious and unreliable became streamlined. The visual quality improved drastically, and we could operate confidently, for our stage recordings, and it has even inspired us to consider trying live streaming for future productions.”

Whether you’re a professional producer or a passionate creator like Mr. Sato, the TriCaster Mini S offers an unparalleled opportunity to elevate your production quality while simplifying your workflow.
