How Portland Is transforming the fan experience with tech

When it comes to storytelling on and off the court, Portland Trail Blazers are shooting the lights out. Teaming up with Vizrt, they’ve taken their broadcasts from basic to brilliant, mixing slick graphics, smart insights, Augmented Reality, and in-depth analysis to give fans a whole new experience whether they are watching courtside or at home.

Vizrt’s tools are helping the Blazers live up to their name and turn every game into a story worth watching. It’s not just better coverage – it’s a whole new standard in basketball broadcasting.

The Challenge

Portland Trail Blazers knew the game and fan expectations were changing. Fast.

Today’s fans – who’ve grown up with highlight reels on socials, gaming, and second screens – expect more than just replays. They want fast facts, fresh angles, and deeper insight into what’s really happening on the court.

As John McConnell, Portland Trail Blazers Product Manager, puts it:

It can be overwhelming at times. How do we look at what’s happening in a game and get down to the stuff fans really want to see? Our focus was to be economic with our choices, ensuring that fans get the information they want quickly and in a visually appealing way. John McConnell, Product Manager, Portland Trail Blazers

The Blazers needed a way to turn live action into sharp, engaging storytelling every night – at home and on the road.

“The challenge has been – how do we make the product more entertaining? And so going deeper with the statistics in basketball, trying to find more interesting ways to show them, these are all things we targeted as goals and things that we could do to make it more entertaining for our fans. And so that’s what we’ve been trying to do. And Vizrt has been a big partner, giving us the tools to try and do those things,” adds McConnell.

What If…

What if the broadcast wasn’t just about watching the game – but understanding it? Broadcasters were doing that. What if teams did the same, direct to fans?

That’s where Vizrt came in, a trusted partner since 2001. The Blazers tapped into Vizrt’s full lineup of sports storytelling tech – from real-time graphics to AR and 3D analysis – to level up every frame of their coverage.

Suddenly, everything clicked.

Stats weren’t just shown. Graphics were informative AND immersive. And every dunk, drive, and layup had a story behind it.

A Fresh Approach

The Trail Blazers built a modern production playbook around Vizrt.

  • Viz Artist + Viz Engine to power the core graphics: score bugs, stat boxes, slick lower thirds.
  • Viz Arena to add virtual team logos, lineups, and AR graphics – on the court, live.
  • Viz Libero to add analysis. Player tracking, stat overlays, and 3D camera flights breaking down plays every angle – coaching-level insight made for fans.

The Outcome

Vizrt and Portland Trail Blazers = Slam Dunk.

  • Fans were engaged
The Blazers saw social media light up with love for the data-driven storytelling. McConnell sums it up perfectly: “Getting feedback from fans who specifically mention the use of our graphics is by far the most rewarding part.”
  • Rip City TV ratings shoot up
The Blazers made every game look pro, slick and smooth, and in turn expanded their broadcast footprint into more households, using Vizrt tools to create content that resonates with both casual viewers and die-hard fans.
  • Dynamic storytelling
Analysis helped the producers tell relatable stories. As Thurley, who was a fan long before he began working for the Blazers, reflects, “We can now show fans exactly how a play develops. It’s like coaching on-screen, and it deepens their appreciation of the game.”
  • Scalable efficiency
The ability to reliably produce up to 15 Viz Libero analysis clips per game night. Same crew. Same tools. From anywhere. “Viz Libero is a true workhorse that doesn’t just get the job done; it elevates the storytelling experience,” says Thurley.

Key Highlights of Innovation

  • Live substitution graphics
A once-overlooked element became an integral part of the broadcast, keeping fans informed with near-instant accuracy.
  • Virtual Advertising
Boosting sponsorship value without disrupting play.
  • Tracking stats
From dunk heights, player speed, to fan elbow angles, fans lapped up the numbers.

Eye, Always, On The Ball

The Trail Blazers are constantly looking for new and exciting ways to boost fan engagement. In April 2025, they became the first professional sports team to offer haptic devices at all home games to give visually impaired fans an inclusive, real-time gameday experience. Not to mention being early adopters of gamification.

“Portland’s a really unique city. Our fans bring so much enthusiasm to every game. I’m proud to say that the Trail Blazers have one of the best broadcasts in the league, and of course, we believe they have the best fans in the league, so we want our broadcasts to always match their enthusiasm and their intelligence and their basketball knowledge.

“We want to match that on the broadcast, with our analysts, with the video, with the highlights that we show, but especially with our graphics, and really do them justice. Because it’s a really fun thing to do. The fans love it, and we want to match our fans energy with what we do,” says McConnell.

Don’t forget to include:
  • 1. Document Overview list view is handy to have open so you can see labeled areas indicating where some edits can be made
  • 2. Slug is the URL. Once you save a draft with a page title, it defaults to that unless you edit it. Editing the slug URL to be more concise is a benefit at times.
  • 3. Meta Description is an SEO-friendly description.
  • 4. Keyphrase Synonyms is where the bulk of your keywords will go. Separate each keyword or phrase with a comma. These are all supporting keywords to the Main Keyphrase (see item #7).
  • 5. Featured image: This is part of the meta-data and auto-populates any query card image on hub pages. Page Titles and Subheadings are also elements needed to populate query cards and metadata.
  • 6. Excerpt This auto-populates on query card text. If left empty, it will default to the first bit of text on the page. This can be the same as the Meta description.
  • 7. Focus Keyphrase is the main Keyword. The inputs for this and the supporting keywords are in slightly separate areas, making it a little confusing.
